I was going to take a shower last night but we’ve had torrential rain all day and our well water was the color of cider. I’ve bathed in it before when we had our first spring melt and it looked the same, but really didn’t feel up to it last night. I think it’s just tannins from the soil, but bathing in orange water to get clean is less than desirable.

We got a tiny washing machine!

We are not dead…just very busy.

For the last two months or so, our posting has become a bit sporadic and for that we apologize.   Since we moved into our cabin, we have been been focusing more on living the experience than documenting it.   We wanted to pay attention to what was going on around us rather than worrying about recording it and writing about it.  Who really wants to turn their daily life into an essay assignment?

That being said, we are excited about sharing what has been going with cabin life and our plans for this summer.  We’ve had some MAJOR changes in our life (all for the better) and when we have a moment, we will be sure to write out delightfully eloquent posts.  But for now, you will just have to wait.

(but the short story is that  we bought the adjacent 20 acres, we are getting bees and guinea hens, our well is producing water…just the orangeish yellowish type, all of the snow melted and the place looks like a grey/brown swamp, and we are planting a pile of fruit trees. And this weekend we are in New York for a fancy family party).

And with the snow melt our shallow well (hand dug and only 9’ deep) a lot of ground water has flooded our well so we have a lot of clay and tannic acid tinting our water. We always filter our potable water with a 0.2 micron ceramic filter, but this orange water is gross.

With record high temps, all of our beautiful snow melted.

The cabin after the blizzard.

My morning commute.

My morning commute after our blizzard that dumped over a foot of snow in a day.  I had to snowshoe to the road and then use the Yooper scooper to move a ton of snow.  I was rescued by a truck with a plow, owned by one of the Sarazin brothers.  He’s one of the guys that logged our property.  I was half inclined to ask him if he wanted to finish the job this summer and help us clean up all the slash he left behind…  Anyway, I still had quite a bit of shoveling to do to get the truck out and then drove the 40 minutes to work.  Thank God for 4 wheel drive.  I’m still amazed that anyone even drove down our road when I was there and that I got help.  So neighborly, even in the middle of nowhere. Of course all this happens the day Caleb leaves for San Francisco!

The entryway getting laid out. I am doing all of the work in the shop then will haul it out to the cabin for finishing and assembly.

The same boards after planing. Not too bad.

The pile of oak she is cleaning. It looks pretty rough, but some of the rot can actually make things look interesting so long had it isn’t too bad.

It is hard work, but she is having a good time.
